History
In his final year in 1983 as a student at UCL, Ricky Gervais and his friend Bill Macrae formed a pop duo, Seona Dancing (named after a friend and fellow student Seona Myerscough).
They were signed to London Records after sending in a 16 track demo tape (12 of the tracks have never been released and are'nt planned to be anytime soon). In 1983, they released their single "More to Lose," and it reached number 70 on the UK charts. Their follow-up, "Bitter Heart," reached number 79 on the UK charts. The group then disbanded in 1984.
Bill Macrae faded into obscurity. However, Ricky Gervais went on to have a successful career as an award-winning comic writer and comedian. He is mostly known as the co-writer and star of the successful hit BBC comedy The Office, and more recently Extras.
Trivia
In 1985, after Seona Dancing disbanded, a radio station in Metro Manila, Philippines, DWRT-FM, started playing a song billed as "Fade" by Medium (also billed as "Medium" by Fade). It became a favourite theme song for many Filipino teenagers. DWRT-FM lied about the song title and artist name. Consequently, nobody was able to find the record and play it themselves. Additionally, to prevent other radio stations from recording it and playing it, DWRT-FM inserted a station I.D. midway through the track. Eventually, another radio station revealed the identity of the song as "More to Lose" by Seona Dancing.
Former members of the Filipino New Wave/Alternative rock band Half Life Half Death, Alfie Vera Mella (on vocals and keyboards) and Rain Paggao (on guitar) collaborated in 2006 and recorded their version of "More to Lose." The piece is included in Paggao's project; an album entitled Songs for Moonlit Nights by The Rain (2006, Independent).
